Shelley also became enamored of Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft’s daughter, Mary, and, in 1814, they eloped to Europe. The poem emerged from Shelley’s friendship with the British philosopher William Godwin, and it expressed Godwin’s freethinking Socialist philosophy.
